Cruise Lines affected by Georgia-Russia conflict.
Fred Olsen Cruise Line and Discovery Voyages have had to make some crucial decisions with the recent conflict in the Black Sea state of Georgia. With Georgia’s attempted assault on Russia in order to retake South Ossetia, Russian troops have moved deep into their territory in a counter-offence which has seen scenes of devastation and terror within the country. With these events unfolding Fred Olsen and Discovery Voyages have had to consider changing itineraries which visit the Georgian port of Batumi. Most known for its historical content, amazing monuments, and wonderful beaches. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office have advised of non essential travelling to Georgia to be avoided, hence tourism to the spot has been stopped.
Tourists with trips already planned are being offered refunds, or trips to nearby Armenia. Fred Olsen’s general sales manager said “a decision has not yet been made about whether to keep the Georgian port of Batumi in the August and September sailings”.
Voyages of Discovery are not due to visit the port until October and Managing Director David Mellow said “we are watching the situation...Once we receive news there might be a problem with the ship, we will advise customers of the possible impact on itineraries”
It is a very difficult time for the people of Georgia, it is important that the cruise lines look after the welfare and safety of their passengers, and this will always be looked at as a priority.
